OpenAI's next major investors may be Apple and Nvidia.

According to reports, Nvidia and Apple are discussing participating in OpenAI's upcoming fundraising round, which may value the company that makes ChatGPT at $100 billion.

The New York Times reports that, based on its sources, Thrive Capital, an earlier OpenAI investor, would spearhead the purchase, should it proceed. (The WSJ first the news of Apple's possible interest, while Bloomberg was first to report on Nvidia's involvement.) Microsoft, which now holds a 49% stake in OpenAI, might take part as well.

OpenAI requires funding. Its annualized sales allegedly surpassed $3.4 billion at the beginning of the year, but as it increases its AI training and staffing efforts, it is expected to lose $5 billion by year's end.

OpenAI is connected to both businesses. It uses Nvidia GPUs to operate and train its generative AI models, while earlier this year, Apple decided to use ChatGPT in iOS as a part of Apple Intelligence, the company's upcoming AI feature set.
